Day 21, Kinder, La, 0 miles, 919 miles total

I took a day off today in the big town of Kinder.  My plan was to lay in bed and eat all day.  Sadly, I had nothing to eat for lunch or dinner so was forced to go out into the daylight to a market across the street.

Besides crossing the street, I also had to cross some railroad tracks.

De train, boss!  De train!

There actually is a train in the above picture but it's too far away to see.

I saw 8 spikes laying on the ballast in about 50 yards.  Makes me wonder how train tracks ever manage to stay put.

I'm not sure what this came from.  Maybe I don't want to know.

Anyway, I'm glad I'm not riding today.  During the last half of yesterday's ride my right quad started aching a little just above the knee.  So today I'm taking it easy, stretching it out and taking some ibuprofen to try and keep it under control.  This is something that could derail the tour if it gets worse, and I'm not going to be a happy camper if that happens.

The ride tomorrow is flat and relatively short at 40 miles or so.  I'll see how that goes and hope for the best.  The route is only going to get tougher in Texas as I start to encounter the first serious climbs of the tour.  I sure hope my body holds up for it.  I'm going to be very disappointed if it doesn't.

  1. Hopefully the rest and stretching helps the quad pain. I wonder if it was that 3 mile run of 19 mph pace getting across that bridge that caused the pain - doms (delayed onset muscle soreness). If you have something to massage it like a foam roller substitute that might help. Pulling for you and enjoying your blog.

  2. Gary, I have a reminder set up each morning here in the UK at 7am my time (probably 1am currently for you) and now sitting on a packed train reading your news. Great to reminisce. The east part of TX is flattish compared with the hill country! Keep safe and enjoy every day.

    1. It was a rather helpless feeling, Mike. But when I noticed that everyone was moving over for me, I felt a lot better. I can't get over how great everyone has been.
